Nearly all of Alsager braved the rain last Saturday and turned out to line
the streets for the
annual Carnival parade. The theme this year was musicals and, as always, a huge
amount of
effort had been made throughout the town to provide spectators with an array
of outstanding
floats.
The town's Air Training Corp's band led the way with the Carnival Queen, Aimee
Standring, who
was riding in a vintage Rolls Royce. Representatives of nearly all the town's
clubs churches
were in the parade and the Chairman of the town council, Councillor Andy Snape
came at the
rear of the walkers in a Bentley Continental - loaned for the day by Bentley
Motors.
On the carnival field the rain held its breath as the town festivities continued.
Over 50 stalls run
by local organisations were doing business for charities and worthy causes.
Chilren's sports were held in addition to a number of juggling, mime and acrobatic
acts who
thrilled audiences all afternoon.
A special delivery of waste oatcakes arrived early morning from 'Barry's Pantry'
in the village to
provide competitors with their missiles for the second world oatcake throwing
championships.
Three trophies were up for grabs- the under 16 was won by Joel Dovey (18.55m),
the ladies
champion was Helen Wrigglesworth (17.25m), and the new world oatcake throwing
champion
is Dave Oakes with a competition record breaking throw of 28.55m.
Despite the weather organisers believe that this could be a record breaking
year financially and
would like to thank everyone involved in making the day a community event for
everyone in the
town, and for all the visiters for the day who came to join in.
Alsager Carnival is run by members of Alsager Round Table, with considerable
help from
Rotary, Lions, Ladies Circle and the Scouting Movement.
