Brereton Country Park

The story of Brereton began in the last Ice Age when melting water left huge deposits of sand.
This sand has shaped the history and present day appearance of Brereton. The park once formed part of the Brereton family estate, centred one mile away at Brereton Hall.

Area Tour: Next Location

Until 1959 the poor sandy soil supported a woodland plantation and heath vegetation which was managed for timber and game.
Then a very fine and pure silica sand was discovered and this was extracted and used throughout the world for moulds, glass, talcum and cleaning powders. The lake left after the extraction now forms the centre of Brereton Heath Country Park.

The building near the park entrance is a visitor centre run by Congleton Borough Council. The information on these pages was adapted from posters on the walls there.

A member of Crewe and Nantwich Conservation Volunteers works to improve the habitat for the wildlife.

Cheshire Countryside Management have organised Willow Workshops on the site to teach traditional crafts such as basket making and fence construction.
